Nikolai Roerich's stage designs and paintings based on theatre productions constitute one of the most interesting chapters of his exceptionally diverse artistic heritage. The Offerings, executed in 1910 after a stage design for Aleksey's Remizov's play The Tragedy of Judas, the Prince of Iscariot, is considered one of the most important works in Roerich's oeuvre (E.P. Yakovleva, Theater Designs by Nikolai Roerich, exh. cat, Samara, 1996, p. 272, illus).
Aleksey Remizov and Nikolai Roerich shared a warm friendship already before Remizov began to work on the The Tragedy of Judas in 1908. Remizov and Roerich successfully experimented with literary genres and visual art, and both of them admired the culture of pagan and medieval Russia. In his memoir Roerich recalled, 'my relationship with Remizov was very special. We did not see each other often, but there has always been a deep spiritual connection between us... He was not just a master of the word, but could truly lead one's spirit' (N.K. Roerich, Friends: The Artists of Life, Moscow, 1993, p. 85).
Remizov based The Tragedy of Judas on the apocryphal Russian legend of Judas the Traitor, reworking the plot to centre on the tension between the characters' free will and destiny. The 'Silver Age' of Russian art and literature was so fascinated with the mystical, the grotesque and the stylized, that in order to highlight the mythical nature of the play, Remizov added to his narrative a character worthy of an Indian Epic: the monkey king Asyka. The Offerings focuses on the moment when Asyka visits Pontius Pilate, announcing his arrival with a triumphant procession. Although Remizov did not explicitly describe this in the written play, Roerich unexpectedly chose to portray the violent ancient tradition of bringing a ruler the severed heads of his enemies.
From a formal perspective, it is a striking example of Roerich's unsurpassed ability to execute works in a virtually monochromatic palette. Here, Roerich constructed the image out of a dynamic interplay of different hues of the same colour, blending in some areas and contrasting in others. This complete mastery over colour allowed Roerich to create a beautiful impression of the mid-day sun, filling everything with warm golden tones. With the elegant palette of exquisite hues of yellow and brown-red, which allowed even the greens to appear golden, Roerich transformed the garden into Eden and the golden apples into the Fruits of Wisdom. Art critics praised the elegant beauty of the work:
Here Roerich has found, properly ordered and highlighted all the significant features [of the theme]...Enchanting and captivating, they attract the viewer with the beauty of unexpected details and with the mysterious and deep meaning of their presence... The artist here approached his task simultaneously with fear and fascination, and he conveys both of these feelings to the viewer (S. Yaremich, At the origins of art: Roerich, Svobodnoye iskusstvo, 1916, pp. 109-145).
With the goal of seeing The Tragedy of Judas realized on stage, Remizov showed the play to the actress Vera Fyodorovna Komissarzhevskaya, with whom he had previously worked. Komissarzhevskaya agreed to produce the play in the theatre she directed, commissioning Roerich to design the sets, probably on the suggestion of Remizov. In 1909, Roerich designed two sets for The Tragedy of Judas: one for the first act and another for the second and the third, On a Clear Night and Jerusalem (L.V. Korotkina, 'The Question of the Designs by Roerich for Remizov's Play, The Tragedy of Judas, the Prince of Iscariot,'The State Russian Museum, Russian Art from the tenth to the twentieth century, third ed., Saint-Petersburg, 1997, pp. 80-90). The Offerings was based on the second design, Jerusalem (Garden of the Golden Apples), the setting for the second and third acts.
Unfortunately in November 1909, Komissarzhevskaya abruptly left the theatre, and the production was under threat of cancellation. She died a year later, and only in 1916 did Fedor Komissarzhevky, her brother, direct and finally stage the production, but in his own theatre and using his own set designs.
Nevertheless, Roerich reworked the theme from his stage designs in his later works. He was particularly captivated by the idea of Jerusalem as the Holy City, fully realized in The Offerings. A painting of astonishing beauty, it depicts Pilate's house and the garden of the golden apples that belonged to Judas' father, Simon. The painting vividly evokes the Holy City, drenched bright light of the Middle Eastern Sun, as if situated on the very border between Heaven and Earth.
Twenty years later this idea of the Holy City reached its true apotheosis in one of Roerich's greatest paintings, Madonna Laboris (1931). Here the artist created an ideal image of Heavenly Jerusalem: the Garden of Eden, the dwelling place of the Highest Powers and the refuge of the saved righteous souls. Ultimately The Offerings and Madonna Laboris came to constitute a contrasting pair, both in their colour schemes and subjects. The warm golden colour of The Offerings directly opposes the cool heavenly blue of Madonna Laboris, as does the subject of human cruelty versus in the first versus that of divine mercy in the second.
Almost immediately after its execution, The Offerings entered the collection of the artist's wife, Elena Ivanovna. In 1914, the painting was exhibited in Malmö, Sweden and was subsequently included in every personal exhibition of Roerich's work throughout Europe and the United States. It then entered the collection of the newly formed Roerich Museum in New York, after which it was sold to a private collector.
